It’s fall and that means all things apples! We met some cousins at an apple orchard last week and picked up a bag of apples. My mouth was already watering thinking about the yummy apple crisp we would make.
What kind apples should I use in an apple crisp?
I think any kind of apple works for apple crisp but the best apples to use are both tart and sweet and also crisp. We used Sweet 16 for this apple crisp and it was delicious!
How to Make Healthy Apple Crisp with Almond Flour
Prep the Apples
To begin, wash and dry the apples. Next, peel and cut the apples into slices. While peeling isn’t completely necessary, I like to use this apple peeler/corer/slicer to speed up the process, and my kids love to eat the peels. Toss the apple slices in a bowl with the spices, maple syrup, and water. Put this mixture into a pan.
Make the Crumble Topping
In a bowl combine the oats, almond flour, nuts, cinnamon, salt, coconut oil/butter, and maple syrup. Stir it together and spread it on top of the apples.
Bake the Apple Crisp
Bake the crisp until the apples are soft, covering the pan loosely with aluminum foil at the halfway point to prevent it from getting too brown. Serve with vanilla ice cream and enjoy!
- 10-12 medium-large apples
- 2 Tbsp maple syrup
- 3 Tbsp water
- 4 tsp cinnamon
- 1 tsp nutmeg
- 1 1/2 cups old-fashioned oats
- 1 1/2 cups almond flour
- 1 cup chopped pecans or walnuts
- 2 tsp cinnamon
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 1/2 cup melted butter or coconut oil
- 1/4 cup maple syrup
Peel and slice the apples (about 1/4 inch thick) .
In a large bowl, toss the apples with the maple syrup, water, cinnamon, and nutmeg. Dump the apples into a greased 9 x 13" baking dish.
To a bowl, add the oats, almond flour, nuts, cinnamon, salt, butter/coconut oil, and maple syrup. Stir it altogether and crumble it over the apples.
Bake at 350° for 40-45 minutes until apples are soft. At the halfway point of baking, cover the pan loosely with aluminum foil to prevent it from getting too brown.
